XML is a format used by many PHP developers working with syndicated/aggregated content, APIs, structured data and search engine resources. Although modern applications mostly exchange data in JSON format, XML continues to appear in RSS feeds, legacy integrations, third-party services and website sitemaps.

The good thing is PHP provides several tools for working with XML including SimpleXML and DOMDocument. Developers can build practical features without depending on large external libraries by combining these tools together.

Reading RSS Feeds with PHP

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is mostly used by blogs, news websites, podcasts and other publishing platforms to distribute updated content. An RSS reader can fetch a feed and parse its XML content then present the fresh content in application.

PHP's simplexml_load_file() function provides a simple way to load an RSS document. Elements of the feed can be accessed after loading the feed, such as the channel title, description, item title, publication date, link and description.

This practical guide on creating an RSS feed reader in PHP demonstrates how to load an RSS feed with SimpleXML and loop through its items to display feed content.

When building an RSS reader, it is also worth considering error handling, connection timeouts, malformed feeds, caching and HTML sanitization. These considerations become important when the application consumes feeds from multiple external websites.

Converting Between XML and PHP Arrays

After an application has retrieved XML data, the application can then manipulate it using PHP's native array syntax. The SimpleXML function can be combined with json_encode() and json_decode() to create an associative array for simple XML structures.

For example, an XML document that contains books, products or other repeated elements can be transformed into an array and then filtered or processed using PHP array functions.

However, more complex XML documents may contain attributes, namespaces, nested elements and repeated nodes. In such cases, DOMDocument provides better control over the conversion process.

Understanding this difference is important when processing XML received from APIs or other external services. A simple conversion approach may be sufficient for basic documents but a recursive DOM-based approach can preserve attributes and provide more control over the resulting structure.

For a better understanding of both approaches, the PHP guide to converting between arrays and XML provides practical examples using SimpleXML and DOMDocument.

Generating XML Sitemaps Dynamically

XML is not limited to consuming external data. PHP applications can also generate XML documents themselves.

A common example is an XML sitemap. A sitemap provides search engines with URLs that are important to a website and can include information such as when pages were last modified.

PHP's DOMDocument class can be used to generate a sitemap programmatically. A basic implementation creates a urlset root element, loops through a collection of website URLs, creates individual url elements and adds values such as loc and lastmod.

This approach becomes useful for dynamic websites. An application can retrieve URLs from a database and generate the XML file whenever the sitemap needs to be updated instead of manaually maintaining it.

This guide to generating a sitemap XML file in PHP demonstrates this approach with DOMDocument, including creating the sitemap structure and saving the result as sitemap.xml.
